About Muizenberg Station

Muizenberg Station is not the oldest building in Muizenberg - that honour is held by the Het Posthuys Museum, which dates back to 1742 when it was built by the Dutch East India Company - but the double-storey, red-brick Edwardian building with its beautifully arched sandstone entrances cuts an impressive figure on Main Road. And it’s easily the prettiest railway station on the Simon’s Town line.

Did you know? It’s evident, even at a glance, that Muizenberg Station is a grand building. But it is its clock tower that is particularly unique, made as it is from teak.

It was built when Muizenberg was known as the ‘Brighton of South Africa’. It was 1883 when the railway first reached the seaside suburb, when it was not unusual for thousands of people to head out to the beach for the day, making Muizenberg Cape Town’s first beach resort.

Muizenberg station was designed by a pupil of Sir Herbert Baker, made a National Monument in 1982, and recently underwent extensive restoration. Much of its material is local - the paving and stairs are quarry flagstone from Elsie’s Peak, and the dressed sandstone is from Kalk Bay. But it is the high wooden ceilings that are its most beautiful feature.

When first completed, the upstairs rooms served as a residence for the station master and his family.

Today Muizenberg Station is on what is aptly called ‘historical mile’, a stretch of sidewalk along Main Road paved with red brick that follows alongside the historical buildings dating back to the late 1890s.
