Wynberg is a residential area in the southern suburbs of Cape Town that is also home to an array of commercial enterprises and cultural hotspots. It is along a main transport route, making it even busier and more centrally located for the ultimate convenience. As such, it is no wonder that this entire area is bustling with locals, tourists, and students from all over the world.
Maynardville Park is perfectly nestled amidst so many of the goings-on of the Mother City. This is a beautifully green escape from the busy city around it, and is known for the art, drama and music performances that are so frequently held in the open-air theatre here. In fact, this theatre hosts no fewer than about 20 000 patrons every year, who come to the park to watch a variety of shows. One of the most popular of these is Shakespeare in the Park, which is an annual production.
In addition to the many cultural attractions, Maynardville Park is also well known and loved for its peaceful ambience, which is best enjoyed while having a picnic on the grassy areas, or exploring the many pathways on foot or bicycle. Dogs are allowed in the park as long as they are kept on their leashes.
Those who have an interest in the botanical wealth of South Africa will enjoy identifying the many flower and tree species. These include the stunning Mediterranean cork oak, swamp cypress and lemon-scented gum trees.
The Krakeelwater pond and the water feature are both places of pristine peacefulness and tranquillity, adding so much to the natural splendour of the park and making for stunning backdrops for photographs or lazy days spent with special people.
Maynardville Park is open every day from 07h00 to 19h00 in summer (September to March) and from 07h30 to 18h00 in winter (April to August).
