About Haakgat Point

Haakgat Point is the kiting hotspot of Cape Town. It is a long strip of beautiful beach just 3 kilometres downwind of Big Bay, and everyone’s favourite wave spot.

Did you know? When it is quiet at Haakgat then the anglers come out to play.

Windy days can get rather bumpy. But when the wind is playing along, people rate it as ‘epic!’. The wind is a perfect side shore wind with waves that peel beautifully. Regulars rate Haakgat best at high tide when there are big swells (a minimum of ten foot).

If you’re uncertain just look for the line of cars parked along Otto du Plessis Drive near the little parking area reserved for Haakgat. You will see the kites up in the air long before you find the parking area.

But take care. Haakgat is really for seasoned kiters as the shorebreak can be ruthless. It breaks right on the beach, and there are serious rip tides close to the beach, which is why Sunset Beach, Kite Beach and Big Bay tend to be more popular.

If you want to learn how to kitesurf head to the lake behind the sand dunes at Sunset Beach. Rietvlei is a great stretch of water to ‘test the waters’. You can launch at Milnerton Aquatic Club.
