Edgemead, Cape Town North
The residential suburb of Edgemead that lies at the foot of the Tygerberg hills to the north of the centre of Cape Town is regarded as a suburb of Bellville. The leafy village is only 20 km from town and has easy access to the N1, making it a sought after suburb for residents of Cape Town, and a popular place to stay, particularly as it lies so close to the Durbanville Wine Route, fast becoming one of South Africa’s top wine districts.
Edgemead may have had humble beginnings as a suburb with affordable housing for first-time buyers, during the 1970s, but today it is a sought after neighbourhood in an area that has benefited from initial controls in the title deeds that included no overhead telephone or electricity wires and no trees removed without permission. Even advertising was strictly controlled, with the effect that today this is a green, garden suburb with open spaces and sought after properties, particularly as investment opportunities.
Grand West Casino, in Goodwood, is a major draw card to Edgemead. The world-class casino has been designed in the style of historical Cape Town with a children’s entertainment centre, an Olympic size ice rink and a variety of restaurants, pubs, clubs and shops. And Tygervalley and Canal Walk - both easy destinations from Edgemead - make this an exciting shopping destination, and place retail at the centre of a visit to Cape Town - an exhilarating venture in this retail heart of Cape Town.
