Devils Peak Estate, City Bowl:
Devil’s Peak estate lies on the slopes just above the city centre, between Vredehoek and the Table Mountain National Park. Not only are the views up here over Table Bay superlative, but the suburb is not zoned for flats, townhouses or multi-dwelling units and, as such, is largely given over to smaller homes - certainly smaller than Vredehoek - and zealously guarded by residents, who regard Devil’s Peak as a sensitive area that will not benefit from any further development. Devil’s Peak is one of the major landmarks of Cape Town and forms part of the mountainous backdrop to the city. The distinctive peak lies to the left of Table Mountain with Lion’s Head and Signal Hill to the right of the table top - when looking at the mountain from the harbour.

One can walk to the summit of this 1000 metre peak, originally known as Windberg - the peak is exposed to a great deal of wind and dust, making it easier to climb during the wet, winter months - and there are a number of easy walks on the lower slopes of the mountain. The only safe ascent to the peak though, is considered to be from the Saddle, between the peak and Table Mountain. Living in this beautiful part of Cape Town might mean that your cell phone reception leaves a little to be desired, but access to the heart of the city is excellent, the views alone are worth it, and the stillness at night might mean, furthermore, that you could do without the disturbance.
