About Amy Biehl Memorial

When young, American student, Amy Biehl, came to South Africa to work and study at UWC’s Community Law Centre, no one could have imagined that she would be brutally murdered by PAC supporters in the township of Gugulethu as she dropped her friend at home.

Did you know? This sad and violent incident occurred in 1993, before the election of Nelson Mandela and full democracy in 1994. In 1998, all four men convicted of her murder were pardoned by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Not only did her family support their release, but started the Amy Biehl Foundation Trust to work with youth in the townships in the hopes of deterring future violence of this nature. The foundation aims to empower young disadvantaged youth through education and cultural activities in the hopes that they’ll discover their purpose and talents and move in the opposite direction of drugs and crime.

Two of the men convicted of her murder now work for the foundation and provide a very powerful example of how forgiveness and reconciliation can and has changed lives.

Today, you can join half or full- day tours with the foundation which takes you through Amy’s story, South Africa’s darker history and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. You will drive into the Gugulethu township, see the Amy Biehl Memorial site and visit some of the schools where they have programmes such as music, singing, dance and sports lessons as well as HIV education.

In Nelson’s Mandela’s acceptance speech of the Congressional Gold Media in 1998, he said;

"Among those we remember today is young Amy Biehl. She made our aspirations her own and lost her life in the turmoil of our transition, as the new South Africa struggled to be born in the dying moments of apartheid. Through her, our peoples have also shared the pain of confronting a terrible past, as we take the path towards the reconciliation and healing of our nation."
