Overnight? Stay in Rustenburg, in North West Province

Formally known as the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace, this stadium is situated in Rustenburg, which is a charming town at the foot of the Magaliesberg Mountain Range in the North West Province. This stadium was first built in 1999, but underwent renovations in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, hosted by South Africa.

This stadium hosts a number of football, rugby and athletics events, and is the home ground of the Platinum Stars Football Club. In preparation for the World Cup, its seating capacity was increased from 38 000 to 42 000, the main west stand was expanded and renovated, a new cantilever roof was put on the west side, and the stadium was given new electronic scoreboards, upgraded floodlights, an improved PA system and new seats for the tens of thousands of dedicated football fans that would be attending the matches.

Significantly, the Royal Bafokeng stadium is the only community-owned stadium in the country. In addition to the field, it is equipped with an Olympic-sized swimming pool, athletics track, tennis court, netball court, volleyball court, basketball court, and a fitness centre. The screen measures an impressive 40 square metres and allows all of the fans unhindered visibility of what is happening on the field. There are hospitality suites to accommodate up to 320 VIPs.

Today, these facilities continue to be used for various matches and other events. Rustenburg is the ideal spot for hikes in the Magaliesberg, or a day of fun and adventure at the nearby Sun City Resort. Johannesburg and its international airport are just over two hours’ drive from the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
