Pelindaba is a tiny town in the Hartbeespoort Dam region of the North West Province, South Africa. In terms of its being a residential settlement, Pelindaba is not significant. However, this village has gained international acclaim for being the main Nuclear Research Area in the country and the site of a number of important developments.
In fact, the progressive African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty is also known as the Treaty of Pelindaba and is deals with the prohibition of research, manufacture, acquiring, testing, and so on of nuclear explosive devices in any territory stipulated on the Treaty. In addition, no radioactive wastes can be dumped in the African zone by any of the parties on the Treaty, and no nuclear installations in the one can be attacked.
Pelindaba is about 33 kilometres from Pretoria. The Hartbeespoort Dam is a popular tourist attraction, both for international visitors or those from the nearby city centres that want to get away for the weekend. It is affectionately known as Harties. Water sports are very popular, as is simply enjoying the scenery with friends and family.
