The town of Standerton inherited its name from the original owner of the farm on which it is built, namely Adrian Hendrik Stander.

The Vaal River - one of South Africa's largest rivers - flows through Standerton and provides much in the way of water-based activities. The Grootdraai Dam (the tenth largest dam in South Africa) is 10 kilometers outside of Standerton and is a one of it's major attractions, bringing in revenue from visitors wishing to see the dam and enjoy the activities.
