Ekulindeni, Grass & Wetlands
Formerly known as Eerstehoek, eKulindeni is situated in the Grass and Wetlands region of Mpumalanga in South Africa.
This lovely little town lies on the Southern border of the picturesque Songimvelo Nature Reserve and it is from this nature reserve that it derives most of its economic benefits. The Songimvelo Nature Reserve boasts an area of over 50,000 hectares. The magnificent reserve is only accessible by horse from eKulindeni and comprises of gorgeous looming mountains, glistening valleys and flood plains. It is this terrain that is incredibly tough an can only be accessed by horseback. (Horses can be organized in eKulindeni).
Game viewing in eKulindeni is plentiful and mostly limited to herbivores including elephants. This allows for care-free horse riding and hiking as there are no lions in the area. In addition, for the best game viewing there are a few other fantastic game reserves in the area.
Situated in the Grass and Wetlands part of the Mpumalanga province, eKulindeni is surrounded by a host of wetlands and shimmering lakes. These lovely waters afford visitors the opportunity to enjoy thrilling watersports, swimming, fishing and bird watching.
EKulindeni also borders the kingdom of Swaziland. This area is the last absolute monarchy in sub-saharan Africa, and home to numerous ancient ruins of the lost Legoya people as well as San paintings.
