(Vaalwater has recently been renamed to Mabatlane). In the heart of the Waterberg District, the charming town of Vaalwater is considered the "central" town of the Bushveld region. Vaalwater is situated in the uppermost reaches of the Mokolo River and the village is surrounded by farms and reserves offering plenty of opportunities for adventure activities and outdoor pursuits including game and bird watching, mountain biking, horse riding, hiking and 4x4 trails to name a few.

The Waterberg's beauty, its diversity in plant and animal life, has evolved into the development of many eco tourism projects. For example, the biosphere reserve - the Waterberg Nature Conservancy - which is the combination of conservation areas in order to protect more than 150 000 hectares of Waterberg habitat. The Waterberg Nature Conservancy is the first region in the northern part of South Africa to be named as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
