Houtbosdorp, Capricorn
The little hamlet of Houtbosdorp, in the Capricorn region of Limpopo, lies nestled in the foothills of the northern-most part of the Drakensberg Mountains. The area is infused with tranquil lakes, bountiful waterfalls and indigenous forests set against the backdrop of towering peaks. Houtbosdorp lies in the vicinity of Magoebaskloof where local hiking trails that range between two and five days are the main reason for heading to this part of the world.
That and the incredible beauty of the town and its outlying area - liberally sprinkled with indigenous flowers and multi-coloured fungi that cling to the underside of branches and overturned logs in the natural forests and man-made plantations here. Keep an eye out for the rather elusive samango monkey that makes this region its home.
The Spring Festival, held every September, is another draw card, where local art and crafts that include pottery, leatherwork, wall hangings, hand-woven rugs and carpets and cloth and linen, as well as cheeses, chutneys, jams and pickles whet one’s appetite for home-grown and homemade.
