Umkomaas is situated 25 minutes south of Durban on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal. Umkomaas was established in 1861 in attempt to develop a harbour in the river mouth. Due to the sand bar and hazardous currents the attempt was aborted. The town of Umkomaas was then established in 1902.

Umkomaas is situated on a hillside crowning the river's southern bank boasts some spectacular sea views. This beautiful area might be small but it is quite a buzz! Divers across the world come to Umkomaas to access the famous Aliwal Shoal. Aliwal Shoal is a world renowned scuba diving site and lies buried 5km out at sea. It boasts an average depth of 28m and contains a world of magnificent wonders! Ragged-tooth sharks, hammerhead sharks, Zambezi sharks, copper sharks or bronze whalers, threshers and even the Great White Shark have been identified in this area. A diversity of tropical fish and magnificent coral reefs can also be discovered in these memorable Umkomaas dive locations. The Shoal is dominated by a central ridge, an ancient sand dune that runs almost parallel to the coastline. This ridge is potholed with many caves and overhangs, shelves and gullies, all providing exciting glimpses of the vibrant and varied marine life of the area.

There are exciting wreck dives on the Nebo, which sank in March 1884 after hitting the Shoal, and The Produce which was wrecked on the Aliwal Pinnacles in 1974. This wreck is home to some very large moray eels. Also, take the awesome but thrilling opportunity to go shark cage diving! It will be an experience you will never forget.
The Umkomaas Adventure Village caters for the adventurer and holiday maker alike and offers accommodation, adventure activities and tours, a curio shop, hair salon, restaurant and pub.

A boat trip to view the whales up close and personal in all their glory is an absolute must! The famous Umkomaas golf club is the 3rd oldest course in KwaZulu Natal and is a challenging 5479m course which tests the abilities of all golfers - high or low handicapped - allowing players of all handicaps to enjoy a round. Spectacular sea views, diverse bird life and magnificent trees make for a pleasant golfing experience.
