Situated on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal, Southbroom’s history dates back to 1884 when an English missionary from Wick named Alfred Eyles established a Mission for the Society of Friends called Imbizane, near a hill known as "Ntsaba" or ‘The Outlook’. His sons, Gilbert and Frank Eyles, formed a partnership and set about planning a park-like residential township on the land acquired by their father. A boarding house soon became a hotel and several cottages were dotted around the northern part of the town. Southbroom boasts 5km of beautiful seafront and when the Eyles' brothers set out to develop the town they showed remarkable foresight. They preserved all that was best in the original landscape and provided larger plots making generous provision for parks and open spaces. By doing this, they set Southbroom apart from other neighbouring towns. Today, Southbroom is a flourishing, up-market village with so much to offer holidaymakers! In fact, it has been considered as the ‘jewel’ of the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal.

Southbroom's wealth of vegetation is undoubtedly one of its finest assets. Because strict environmental principals pertaining to all development have been implemented over many years, Southbroom's unique semi-rural character has been well preserved.

Southbroom is also home to the magnificent Frederika Nature Reserve. This reserve encompasses nearly 8 hectares of established dune forests as well as lush indigenous forests. It is regarded as extremely fragile in terms of the complex eco-system. This priceless strip of land was donated by the late Leo Dreissen, shortly before his death in 1977 to the S.A. Nature Conservation.
