Hibberdene is the gateway to the Hibiscus Coast of Kwazulu Natal. It is a cosy seaside town situated 97 km south of Durban, halfway between Scottburgh and Port Shepstone. Hibberdene was named after C.Maxwell-Hibberd who was former Postmaster- General of Natal. Today, it has become one of South Africa's popular holiday destinations and is known for its affordability and the sheer beauty of its well-preserved assets. Hibberdene also boasts an increasing number of overseas tourists who have discovered this coastal jewel.

The village of Hibberdene lies at the mouth of the magnificent Umzimai River. Hibberdene has five popular beaches, of which four are netted for safe swimming. What makes Hibberdene’s beaches so popular is that the warm Indian Ocean flows across its shoreline. Therefore, diving, snorkelling and scuba diving are popular.

The local dive shop offers dive charters to a number of magical reefs. These reefs are unspoiled and are home to many rare species such as the long nose Hawkfish, soft coral sponge and fern coral to name a few. Endemics to the reefs around Hibberdene are the scarce black coral fans. One of the main features, however, is a 7m high wall filled with a diversity of beautiful fans and sponges.

Hibberdene also offers other activities and facilities such as a Ski boat launch, fishing, whale and dolphin watching, bird watching, super tubes, bowls at the Hibberdene Bowling Club, golfing at excellent golf courses in Hibberdene as well as tennis and squash at the Hibberdene Tennis Club.

The Hibberdene lagoon is well worth a visit. Whether wishing to simply relax in the warm sun or enjoy a few fun activities, there is plenty to experince here including the wildlife and diversity of birds along the banks of this river. There is a Fun Pub next to the lagoon which offers a range of activities such as paddling boats, super tubes, putt-putt and trampolines for entertainment.
