The Bloemfontein Zoo is situated in the heart of the capital city of the South African province of the Free State. This zoo is a wonderland for visitors of all ages as they are invited to explore its enclosures and meet some of its wildest and most fascinating residents.
This zoo is renowned for its many primate species, which includes Charlie the Chimpanzee. In total, there are 65 mammal species here. These include the Big 5, which are the elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, leopard and lion. There is an impressive array of bird species too, and these colourful avian residents sit perched just above their visitors, eyeing them curiously. Seeing some of Africa’s most treasured predators and gentlest giants up close is a truly special experience for the memory bank.
There are a number of activities at the zoo that are aimed at keeping every member of the family entertained.
The Bloemfontein Zoo was established in 1906, and has continued to grow and develop since then to be one of the most popular animal sanctuaries in the country. Family outings are always fantastically fun here. Small group tours that are conducted by an experienced guide are also a hit, providing visitors with unique insights and fascinating facts about the animals, their natural habitats and habits, and the ways in which humans can contribute to their conservation.
A Zoo Snooze is a charitable initiative that invites visitors to spend a night at the zoo. The proceeds are donated to conservation projects and breeding programmes.
The Bloemfontein Zoo has a small shop at which visitors can buy snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. There is also a lawn area on which picnics can be enjoyed in the warm South African sunshine.
