The North-Eastern Region, Eastern
Cape: The northern Ukhahlamba district, dominated by the mighty Drakensberg
Mountains, is bordered by Lesotho to the north-east and by Limpopo to the
north-west and forms a border with the Free State. The district is dominated by the
Drakensberg Mountains. The highlights of the region are the the Gariep Dam
and the Southern Drakensberg mountains.
The northern Ukhahlamba region comprises many largely untapped resources, such as recently
discovered prehistoric fossils, over 500km of Wild Trout fishing, snow skiing, hiking
trails, hunting game reserves, San Rock Art and engravings and a wealth of historical
artifacts. Principle towns in the northern Ukhahlamba region are are Aliwal North,
Burgersdorp, Barkly East, Maclear and Mount Fletcher. |
